Climbing Mount Kosciuszko, Kosciuszko National Park

It's stunning, exhilerating and very do-able! From Thredbo Village carpark, on the Alpine Way, the Crackenback chairlift takes you on an almost 2km, 15 minute ascent with spectacular views. This costs $29/adult and $14.50/child, and takes you to the closest access point to Mt Kosciuszko. From here it is a 13km (approx 4-6 hours) return walk to the summit, or alternatively an easy 2km walk to Mt Kosciuszko Lookout.

Metal walkways along most of the path protect the vegetation and make the going relatively easy. Our (at the time) 3 1/2 year old walked the entire distance himself (with just a minimum of parental encouragement!)

As you proceed past the magnificent snow gums beyond the tree line, an amazing world of stunning alpine scenery opens up. From the carpet of wildflowers, to the pristine streams to the imposing granite tors, the view is scensory overload. Skiing to the summit is possible in winter, but obviously the view would be quite different to that described!

Mount-Kosciuszko-summit

Just a word of warning...even in summer be prepared for changeable and bad weather. We departed Thredbo on a fine, sunny, February morning, wearing t-shirts, hats and sunscreen. By the time we reached the summit, it was zero degrees and sleeting, for which we weren't fully prepared. Note the accompanying obligatory mountaintop photo where we grinned through chattering teeth, before promptly descending back below the clouds where fortunately the sun came out.

The Kosciuszko Express Chairlift is open 365 days/yr, 9am-4.30pm.

An alternative route to the summit departs from the parking lot above Charlotte Pass. It is a 9km walk each way, following the old road to the summit, and it's FREE (ie no chairlift).
A bit of trivia: Until 1974 it was possible to drive along here to the top of Mt Kosciuszko).
