Bushwalking at Barren Grounds

Barren Grounds, in the Budderoo National Park is an amazing place for bushwalking. Barren Grounds is where the Southern Highlands, with its crisp climate, meets the Illawarra coastal strip and all its beauty. With an elevation of 600 - 700m above sea level, the area provides unparalled views of the South Coast, from Stanwell Park in the north, to Ulladulla and Pigeon House Mountain in the south.

Located 5km west of the township of Jamberoo, (at the top of Jamberoo Pass), it is easily accessed from the Illawarra and Southern Highlands.

Various bushwalks leave from the Barren Grounds carpark, ranging from easy 2- 3 hour escarpment walk to the longer and more difficult walk to Drawing Room Rocks in the Upper Kangaroo Valley region. Other bushwalks are available in the Budderoo National Park, including around Carrington Falls and Gerringong Falls as well as the Budderoo Track, a bit further along the road to Robertson.

Backpack Camping is permitted in Budderoo National Park provided you are more than 1 km from roads and lookouts (with no camping at all in the Minnamurra Falls area). A small drive in campground is provided at Carrington Falls and some cabins are available in Barren Grounds.

We love this place. It is spectacular, beautiful and easily accessible for anyone staying in the Illawarra or Southern Highlands. Excellent bird life, wildlife and wildflowers particularly in spring. Heaps of leaches in the rainforest make for fun times! The climate can change quickly and get cold enough in winter to snow!

Oh, and the bonus is that it's FREE!
