Oodnadatta Track

The Oodnadatta Track remains one of our families favourite parts of Australia. Its difficult to single out the main reasons for this as there are so many things to enjoy.

The track runs along what is normally a good stretch of dirt road for 640km, from Marla to Marree.

The track basically follows a line of mound springs which sustained Aboriginals for thousands of years and was the track that John MacDouall Stuart followed when he became the first European to cross the continent from south to north. This same route was then taken by the Old Ghan Railway line and the Overland Telegraph line. Substantial remnants of these remain and are easily accessible. The track also takes you to the edge of Lake Eyre South.

Oodnadatta-Track Anyone who is even remotely interested in Austalian history is going to have a ball in this wonderful part of the country. It is absolutely choc-a-block with history. The scenery is classic Australian outback.

The Painted Desert to the west of Oodnadatta is simply the most spectacular outback scenery you will see anywhere. One can continue on past Oodnadatta to reach Lake Eyre North and Dalhousie Springs.

This area is simply a must see. One day I will post a page just on the Oodnadatta track - but come to think of it, if I get the time I will probably spend it heading back out to this gem!

Camping is available at Oodnadatta, Coward Springs and William Creek among others, or simply pull up and make camp as you please. One final word: Take your time and don't rush it!
