Sand Dune Surfing and 4WDriving Wagoe Beach
Wagoe Beach is a super fishing beach just 20km south of Kalbarri. It is also home to some huge sand dunes that are excellent for sand dune surfing and 4WDriving.To access the beach, follow the sign from the main road into the privately run farm, where you pay $10 to get a key that gives you access to the beach. Alternatively, you can camp at the farm with a tent or caravan, or stay in the old fibro fishing shacks (they call them chalets). Access to the beach is included in the camp fee. The owners hire out proper sand duning boards, which work ok, but we find using a standard slick bottom "esky lid" (body board to the uninitiated!) gives us the most speed. It is heaps of fun, whether you can stand up or you just lie down and go for it. The walk back to the top of the dunes to go again will have you puffing hard! The huge sand dunes are very easy to 4WDrive on and are great fun. If you are into fishing in any way, then throwing a line into the deep water immediately off Wagoe Beach will provide you with a wide selection of huge fish. Keep an eye on the swell, as it gets pretty big on this section of coastline. The camping rates are reasonable if you stay for more than a few days, but the ablution block is very average.
Boating on the Murchison River Kalbarri
The Murchison River, which meets the Indian Ocean at the township of Kalbarri, is a beautiful wide, clean river that is well worth spending some time enjoying. With your own tinny, or a hired one from the business located opposite the shops, you can navigate upstream a reasonable way and enjoy the cliffs and farmland that surround the river. The boat hire was reasonably priced and you do not need a licence to be able to hire a boat.
Dine at Finlay's Restaurant Kalbarri
Finlay's began life as a seafood supplier to various parts of Australia, but when the pilot's strike of the 1980's struck, it morphed out of necessity into a restaurant. The thinking was "if we can't get the produce to the market, then let's get the market to come to us"It is this classic Aussie approach that the restaurant is built around. It is great value and has great food, but more than that, it has a fantastic and a genuinely Australian atmosphere. It feels and looks like you have slipped down to your mates place and are having dinner in his back shed. It is extremely popular with travellers, although I am not sure the latte set and those striving for sophistication will like it too much. Kalbarri is a small town (600kn north of Perth) and in the small industrial area to the east of the town is where you will find Finlay's. It is well worth doing.
